Periodontal Disease Treatment in Reidsville, NC
At Wheless & Patton Dentistry, we diagnose and treat periodontal (gum) disease with a careful, comprehensive approach. Gum disease is incredibly common, and when caught early, it can be managed before it leads to tooth loss, bone damage, or ongoing discomfort. We’re here to help protect your gums, teeth, and long‑term oral health.
Understanding Periodontal Disease
Periodontal disease starts when bacteria build up beneath the gums — in places brushing and flossing can’t reach. As these pockets deepen, they cause inflammation, bleeding, and eventually damage to the gum tissue and bone. Early treatment is the key to preventing more serious issues.
How We Diagnose and Treat Gum Disease
Diagnosis
- We begin by gently checking the depth of the pockets between your teeth and gums. Signs of early gum disease (gingivitis) include bleeding when brushing, inflammation, and tenderness.
Treatment
- For most patients, treatment includes a deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) with local numbing to remove bacteria beneath the gum line. This helps the tissue heal and prevents the disease from progressing.
Maintenance
- After treatment, we monitor your gums with follow‑up visits to ensure they’re healing properly. We may also recommend home care such as medicated rinses, regular flossing, and an electric toothbrush. If deeper pockets don’t improve, we’ll discuss whether a specialist (periodontist) is needed.
